If you’re still holding on to your trusty old smartphone, it might be time to check if it’s about to lose a key function — WhatsApp.

Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business will stop working on several older devices as part of their push to enhance security and performance.

Why Is WhatsApp Ending Support?

As technology advances, it’s harder to maintain apps for outdated operating systems. Older phones simply can’t keep up with newer security protocols and features. To keep WhatsApp safe and smooth for the majority of users, support has to be dropped for certain legacy devices.

iPhones Losing WhatsApp Support

If you’re using an iPhone that can’t run iOS 15.1 or later, WhatsApp is saying goodbye.

Affected iPhone Models:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

These models max out at iOS 12.5.7, so there’s no way to update them to meet WhatsApp’s new requirement.

Android Phones Affected

For Android users, support has already ended (as of January 1, 2025) for devices running Android 4.4 (KitKat) or earlier. If you’re still using a phone from the pre-Lollipop era, here’s what that means.

Affected Android Models Include:

Samsung:

  • Galaxy S3
  • Galaxy Note 2
  • Galaxy Ace 3
  • Galaxy S4 Mini

Motorola:

  • Moto G (1st Gen)
  • Moto E (2014)
  • Razr HD

HTC:

  • One X
  • One X+
  • Desire 500
  • Desire 601
WhatsApp

LG:

  • Optimus G
  • Nexus 4
  • G2 Mini
  • L90

Sony:

  • Xperia Z
  • Xperia SP
  • Xperia T
  • Xperia V

How to Check If Your Phone Is Affected

For iPhone Users:

  • Open Settings > General > About
  • If your iOS version is below 15.1, WhatsApp will stop working on your device starting May 5.

For Android Users:

  • Go to Settings > About Phone
  • If it says Android 4.4 or lower, WhatsApp has already ended support.

What You Should Do

1. Back Up Your Chats

Before your phone loses WhatsApp access, make sure to back up your chats:

  • Use iCloud (iPhone) or Google Drive (Android) to save your chat history and media.

2. Check for OS Updates

Some phones may have delayed updates available. If your device can be updated to meet the minimum requirements, do it ASAP.

3. Consider Upgrading

If you’re on a phone that simply can’t be updated, it may be time to consider an upgrade. Newer phones offer better security, faster performance, and most importantly, continued WhatsApp support.
