What started as a random joke has actually become reality for Nigerian-American singer and songwriter, Davido. The singer tweeted and called on his celebrity friends on his Instagram Stories to send him ₦1,000,000. The singer went ahead to share his Wema Bank account details.

The immediate response of his celebrity friends including Femi Otedola, Obi Cubana, and MI among many others was swift.

With Davido sharing screenshots of his Wema Bank account balance, the money rose from ₦7m to ₦22m, ₦42m, ₦53m, ₦55m, ₦57m, ₦60m, ₦67m, ₦70m, ₦74m, ₦78m, ₦80m, ₦85m, ₦87m, ₦82m, ₦95m, ₦97m and ₦114m.

Apparently, the singer wants to use the money to ‘clear my Rolls Royce from port abeg”. Besides this, the other reason is to celebrate his birthday.

David Adedeji Adeleke born November 21, 1992, better known as Davido, is an American-born Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer. David was born in Atlanta, US, and raised in Lagos; he made his music debut as a member of the music group KB International.

Davido rose to fame after releasing “Dami Duro”, the second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo (2012), from which six additional singles—”Back When”, “Ekuro”, “Overseas”, “All of You”, “Gbon Gbon”, and “Feel Alright”—were taken.

In 2012, Davido won the Next Rated award at The Headies. Between 2013 and 2015, he released the hit singles “Gobe”, “One of a Kind”, “Skelewu”, “Aye”, “Tchelete (Goodlife)”, “Naughty”, “Owo Ni Koko”, “The Sound” and “The Money”.

During the #EndSars protest in Nigeria, his song FEM was the anthem as Nigerians across the country demanded an end to police brutality.

Now, Davido is one of Nigeria’s biggest acts, and of course, it won’t surprise many that the singer was able to raise over 100m in less than 3 hours.
