The Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali, has launched the country’s first locally assembled electric car which was powered by Marathon Motors owned by Legendary athlete, Haile Gebrselassie.

The new electric car assembled in Ethiopia is the brand of South Korea’s Hyundai and can be charged at home. The car can travel 304 kilometres after fully charged at home. Marathon Motors has been working with Hyundai for several years.

Additionally, a 50 kilowatts portable charger can charge the car fully in 30 minutes to ensure that drivers are not stranded. When the production of the car increases, Marathon Motors plans to install charging stations across the country like gas stations.

Commenting on the launch of the Electric car, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali said “As we transform #Ethiopia’s greening & climate resilient aspirations into concrete actions through the #GreenLegacy initiative and Sheger & Entoto Parks, this morning I received the first electric car fully assembled in Ethiopia. No emission cars can help reduce pollution.”

The decision to assemble electric cars in Ethiopia follows the request put forth by the prime minister to the Hyundai president. The plant which is a result of a partnership between Hyundai and Marathon Motors has the capacity to assemble 10,000 cars per year.
