Six students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria that represented Africa and Nigeria at the finals of the 2019 Huawei ICT Competition have emerged third at the global finals held in Shenzhen China.

The students, are Abdulqadir Babagana Musa, Muhammad Mustafa Maihaja, Fahad Danladi, Shuaibu Abbas Usman, Kamaludeen Umar and Abdulqudus Adebayo Temidayo first won the Huawei ICT national competition which involved a participation of 13, 600 students from 30 universities across Nigeria before proceeding to represent Nigeria at the recently-concluded Sub-Saharan regional finals held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Team Nigeria took first place at the regional finals with a score of 790.4 thus earning the right to represent Africa at the expense of Tanzania (745.6), Kenya (737.0) and Angola (700.8).

The regional competition finals consist of 14 teams (with 42 students) from 11 countries in Africa which participated in theory and practical examinations on cloud computing, artificial intelligence, mobile networks and big data.

Additionally, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria-Nigeria was recognised with an award for Excellent Academy while Dr Bashir Sadiq of Department of Computer Engineering, ABU Zaria won an award for one of the best instructors.

The 6 Nigerian students have also been offered job opportunities in Huawei Technologies Co. Nigeria Limited to further improve their skills and experience.

By holding annual Huawei ICT Competition, Huawei hopes to attract more ICT academies, governmental organizations, industry institutions, training partners, and industrial enterprises to participate in the program. These competitions improve the digital skills of college and university students, contribute more to education and industry transformation, and achieve far-reaching goals.

Huawei continues to develop talent standards, build talent alliances, and disseminate talent value to build a healthy and robust ICT talent ecosystem. Huawei hopes to transfer a cumulative of more than 700,000 ICT professionals to the industry by 2023, to bridge the ICT talent gap, advance the digital transformation of industries, and bring digital to every person, home and organization for a fully connected, intelligent world.
