bolttech, the global insurtech firm, has deepened its expansion into Africa with the strategic acquisition of mTek, a Kenya-based digital insurance platform known for reshaping how customers compare, buy, and manage insurance.

The move marks a significant milestone in bolttech’s growth trajectory across East Africa and enhances its ambition to become the world’s leading embedded insurance provider.

A Major Step in bolttech’s African Strategy

Founded in 2019, mTek has grown rapidly by offering a fully paperless, mobile-first insurance experience, enabling Kenyan customers to seamlessly access policies from leading insurers such as GA Insurance, Sanlam, and Britam. The platform has been instrumental in widening insurance penetration in Kenya through digital distribution and transparent pricing.

The acquisition positions bolttech to merge mTek’s local market expertise with its own extensive global network, unlocking new opportunities for East Africa’s fast-growing insurance and protection markets.

What the Acquisition Means for Africa’s Insurance Market

By integrating mTek’s capabilities, bolttech will:

  • Expand its embedded insurance offerings for financial services, retail, digital ecosystems, and mobile-network partners across East Africa
  • Accelerate the digitalisation of insurance distribution, particularly in mobile-first markets
  • Improve customer access to affordable, transparent, and simple protection solutions
  • Support regional financial-inclusion efforts through user-friendly digital platforms

The acquisition also follows mTek’s recent partnership with Mastercard to introduce embedded insurance solutions across the region—signalling strong demand for modern, frictionless insurance services.

Leadership Comments on the Deal

bolttech’s Chief Executive Officer for EMEA, Stephan Tan, said the acquisition reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Africa: “This is an exciting step forward as we expand our footprint across the continent. mTek’s innovative platform and talented team align perfectly with our mission to use technology to make protection more accessible. Together, we will accelerate digital transformation in insurance and bring embedded protection to more African customers.”

mTek CEO Bente Krogmann welcomed the next chapter: “Joining the bolttech family allows us to scale our impact far beyond Kenya. Our commitment to simple and inclusive insurance has transformed customer experiences locally, and this partnership will help us deliver even more relevant and innovative solutions across the region.”

mTek Will Continue Operating Locally During Integration

mTek’s leadership team, led by Krogmann, will continue to oversee day-to-day operations in Kenya and East Africa. This ensures stability for:

  • Existing customers
  • Insurance partners
  • Employees
  • Regional regulators

The company will operate under the mTek brand for now, with a rebrand planned at a later stage as part of the integration into bolttech’s global ecosystem.
