Apple has introduced a hypertension notifications feature for the Apple Watch, allowing users in Singapore to receive alerts if signs of chronic high blood pressure are detected.

Hypertension — one of the most widespread yet underdiagnosed conditions — affects more than 1.3 billion adults globally and is a major contributor to heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. Because it often presents no symptoms, many people remain unaware of their risk.

The new feature uses the Apple Watch’s optical heart sensor to analyse how blood vessels respond to each heartbeat. The system works passively in the background, assessing 30 days of data to identify consistent signs of elevated blood pressure. When detected, the user receives a notification recommending further checks or lifestyle adjustments.

Developed through advanced machine learning trained on data from over 100,000 participants and validated in a 2,000-person clinical study, Apple’s hypertension detection technology combines scientific rigour with user accessibility.

Although it does not replace medical diagnosis, Apple expects the feature could help identify over one million undiagnosed hypertension cases within its first year of rollout.

How to Activate Hypertension Notifications

  1. Ensure your Apple Watch and iPhone are updated to the latest watchOS and iOS versions.
  2. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  3. Tap “Set Up” under Hypertension Notifications.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to enable background monitoring.
  5. Make sure Heart Rate and Health Data permissions are turned on for accurate tracking.

Once activated, the feature runs automatically in the background — no manual readings required. If a potential hypertension pattern is detected, users are encouraged to confirm their blood pressure using a clinically validated cuff and share results with their healthcare provider.

The Health app also now includes a Blood Pressure Logging tool, allowing users to record and classify cuff readings according to local medical guidelines and generate a shareable report for clinical visits.

Apple plans to roll out the hypertension notifications feature globally as part of watchOS 26, once regulatory approvals are cleared.
