The advent of coronavirus has accelerated the use of contactless transactions. Google Pay which is owned by the tech giant, Google, is leading in offering technology to enable contactless payment.
With Google Pay, you can make in-store payments without carrying your physical ATM card around. What you simply need to do is to download the app and implement the following steps below. Note, this is for android phones. Don’t worry it is safe and secure and at the same time do not forget to find out the limit for your contactless payment.
What You Need
- A smartphone with Near Field Communication (NFC) Feature
- A virtual or Physical ATM card issued by your bank or mobile money provider
First, add an ATM card to Google Pay
- Open the Google Pay app

- If you have multiple accounts in Google Pay, you can select the account to change:
- In the Google Pay app, tap your profile picture or initial in the top right.
- Tap the account that you want to use to add a debit or credit card.
- If you have multiple accounts in Google Pay, you can select the account to change:
- Swipe up from the bottom.
- Tap Add a card
Debit or credit card.
- Use the camera to capture your card info or enter it manually.
- If you’re asked to verify your payment method, choose an option from the list.
- Find and enter the verification code.
After you add a card, you might find a small charge on your account from the app. This charge checks that your card and account are valid. The charge disappears and doesn’t affect your balance.
Set up a payment method for contactless transactions
If you add one or more payment methods to Google Pay, you can set up contactless payments.
- Open the Google Pay app
- At the top left, tap Menu
- Next to the payment method you want to set up for contactless payments, select Enable contactless.
- Follow the instructions to verify your payment method.
Pay in a shop
Step 1: Wake up and unlock your phone
Turn on your phone screen, and then unlock your phone. You do not need to open the app. You need to turn on NFC to ensure that Google Pay works. Don’t worry, Google Pay will prompt you to turn on NFC. Simply do so.
Step 2: Hold the back of your phone close to the payment reader for a few seconds
When you’ve finished paying, a blue tick will appear on the screen. If the tick isn’t on your screen:
- Try holding your phone in a different way. Your NFC antenna could be near the top or bottom of your device.
- Hold your phone closer to the payment reader.
- Hold your phone for a few extra seconds.
If there is a tick but the cashier says the payment didn’t work:
- Double-check that the shop accepts mobile payments.
- Contact your bank to make sure that your card is working correctly.
