The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has again announced that registration for the National Identification Number (NIN) is free and any staff caught collecting bribes risk seven years in jail if caught.

The NIMC in a notice shared on social media titled ‘NIN Enrolment is Free urged Nigerians to report cases of extortion for onward prosecution.

The tweet reads: “The punishment for extortion if convicted is seven years imprisonment as stipulated in sections 14, 20, & 21, of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission Act and Sections 10 & 12 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.”

Since the Federal Government ordered all Nigerians to link their phone numbers with their NIN, the NIMC has seen large crowds visiting their offices across the country to register for the NIN.

Correspondingly, this has led to an increase in the number of Nigerians who have complained that they are being asked to pay bribes to register for the NIN which was why the NIMC posted the notice.
